David Bowie Retrospective NYC

9.David Bowie
                                                Stenci Portriats

David Bowie will be featured at New York City's Museum of Art and Design. This retrospective will be a collection of Bowie's music , video , image, performance art . I will be in NYC when this exhibit is open. I think any self respecting Bowie fan in the area should. This should be a feast for the eyes and creative soul. Also screenings of his movies and open forums to discuss them. Here is some more information on the retrospective.

David Bowie, Artist, a public program, will celebrate this singular talent who has continued to be a constant innovator in performance-based practices. Expanding past his notoriety as a musician, David Bowie, Artist showcases the too-often-overlooked diversity and multifaceted nature of Bowie’s total artistic output. Presented in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities, this multi-platform retrospective—including a film series as well as kiosks showing music videos, interviews, concert footage and other audio-visual documentation—will run from May 9 to July 15, 2011. The cinema series begins on June 3 and will conclude with the screening of a new 35mm print of “The Man Who Fell to Earth at Film” Forum from June 24 – July 7, 2011.( Read full press release info on tickets and times here --> )

Pop Art Minds

Obsessive Facination by Tracey J Whitney 2005

Pop Trash Beauty had a big pop art infulence. I fell in love with Andy Warhol at age 7 it was all over. Though I did go through impressionist phase. Who dosen't at one time in there life. These days I am gravitating towards grafiti art and Mexican surrealists.  I watched this video on youtube about " Introduction to Pop Art" wanted to share it with you. I think its a perfect jumping off point if your interested in the genre. Google some of the artists mentioned in the video. You may have been a fan and  not known. The collage above was made by me when I was sick in bed for a week. People kept bringing me tabloids to help pass the time. So I took the pictures and cut them up. Hand painting each with acrylic paint. My attempt at pop art . Ive also posted some of my favorite pieces with factiods. We have younger readers who werent exactly born during the big pop art movement. So if you feel some of this is a tad basic. Well your right it is a taster to get them hooked. Just call me your friendly neighborhood pop art pusher. In the hopes the younger generation will carry the love on. Who is your favorite pop artist ?

"Lichtenstein was best known for his paintings based on comic strips, with their themes of passion, romance, science fiction, violence, and war. In these paintings, Lichtenstein uses the commercial art methods: projectors magnify spray-gun stencils, creating dots to make the pictures look like newspaper cartoons seen through a magnifying glass. Men Walking in Heels for Women

9/19/10 - London, ON, Canada - 06

There is a new trend of men in high heels which we will discuss later in this post. I think one movement that even the " GI Joe is not a doll , but and action figure " faction can get behind is the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes movement. For over ten years this organization has been raising awareness in the sexualized abuse of women. Men strap on there heels and proudly march for the women they love. I applaud these gentleman for supporting such a worthy cause. Here is a little bit about there mission though I encourage you to surf there website. Perhaps some of our male readers might walk.

Sexualized violence does not just affect women. It affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities. Sexualized violence is epidemic. Some of the statistics: Every two minutes someone in America is raped. One in six American women are victims of sexual assault. That means someone you know, someone you care about, has been or may become the victim of sexual violence. It may be your mother, your sister, your friend, your girlfriend, your wife, your coworker, or your daughter. (via Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Website)

Men in High Heels Trend

Eddie Izzard Via Hub Pages

Is this really new Prince has been doing it for years. I believe all through history this has been a trend that has come and gone. Actually this trend could go mainstream with many influential lines taking notice. Well guys if you want to try this out we will help you walk in these shoes. Want to see this trend in action watch the video of a fashion show where the male models are working the runway in heels. Is is a little bad that I find it a smidgen gratifying to see them struggle down the runway. If you are going to participate in this trend why do you break in your heels at a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes walk

PTB'S 5 Duran Duran Coachella Fashion Highlights

Ive been a big fan of the Coachella music festival. I never thought that Duran Duran would play the event. I'm so proud of them the spot on performance. Even though I watched from a music stream on youtube. I got sucked into the concert vibe along with some of my Duran fan friends via twitter. As we tweeted vigorously via the youtube site. I'm liking this concert going with out spanx, makeup, heels . Just me in my flannel monkey Jammie's dancing in my living room. I never do a normal music review of the show. We could liken it too a women who picks sports teams by the outfits. There are many finely written and managed Duran Duran websites to do that for us. Such as there very own . Fan managed  Gimme a Wristband . So I provide you with

PTB'S 5  Duran Duran Coachella Fashion Highlights

1. John Taylor's Orange Man Scarf

I'm going through a man scarf love phase. Taylor broke up his black onsom with a brilliant splash of color . This was a fun and eye popping warm orange. This was fun and vibrant nice to see some color in the mix. I love the way the orange warmed up his skin tone. Watch him as they play the title track off there 13th studio album All You Need Is Now

2 . Ana Matronic Red Dress and Sassy Heels

Ana Matronic of  Scissors Sister performs a rap on Duran Duran's track called Safe in the Heat in of Moment. With her sexy sultry voice  and Simon Lebon are a match made in music geek heaven. Lets talk about Ana's rocking red frock . I have been trying to find out the designer all day. Gorgeous cocktail dress that fit her beautifully. Paired with a sassy pair of red heels this women worked this stage in style. Making me want a red dress in the worst way. Watch Ana performing in her gorgeous red onsom at coachella .

3. Nick Rhodes
Nick Rhodes was amazing in this mysterious hat. Artistry of dress at its best. What a perfect hat-mask for an english person to wear in the desert. The texture of the hat was south western. He reminded me of something out of a Mexican surrealist painting. One of John Taylor's followers made a reference to Frida Kahlo. I agree with that reference. If she was to paint him I imagine it would look a lot like this.

4. Happy Dancing Fans
indeed a highlight even on youtube you could see them giving the boys energy. Loving every moment of it as they danced in there festival gear. I did see some girls with flower wreaths sewn into there hair so cute. Happy fans are always a fashion highlight.

5. Simon Lebon White Tuxedo 007 style
Paying tribute to 007 creator Ian Fleming. He rocked white tuxedo jacket that caught the attention of all the twitterati I must say. Looking simply put handsome as the string section played there melodies .Bringing Sass and class in only a way Simon could.

Body Image : Man Bra's Moob Control

It seems that the Internet has blessed me with material . As you know we have talked about male body image. I try to include my male readers in all the fun as much as I can. To think following the blog post that talks about a bra that gets rid of wrinkles. We could do a post about the man bra .I've been watching the male beauty industry for a while now. Its seems that we are talking about breasts allot here on PTB. So I guess this post is to even the playing field .We also learned of the man high heel which just floors me.( I am working on a post all about it )  These are torture devices bestowed upon us by males primarily. Men seriously if you don't have to why do it ?I have some friends who are drag queens. They are even surprised at this new trend of male beautification . My friend Darla who performs in drag shows said this

" Well maybe if this goes mainstream it will be easier for me to shop for clothes, right now to get good fitting undergarments you have to spend allot of money. It would be nice to go over to Targee ( target) and get what I need . Rather than having it FedEx overnight. I don't see it playing over here to our male culture to be honest."

I think Jerry Seinfeld saw this coming a long time ago . I think sometimes I liken it to 1950s sci fi films seem to be predictors to future events. Perhaps the comedy of Seinfeld is the same.

So what do you think , will the Man Bra catch on in your country?

Night Bra that Fights Wrinkles

opps almost forgot my night bra !

A former real estate agent Racheal De boer invented a bra . That will fight wrinkles after years of wearing her own DYI version of the bra. She decided after talking to some of her gal pals that also suffered from wrinkles and sagging she encountered. From this was born the La Decollette. Here is is a excerpt from a recent article about the La Decollette ( Im so getting one of these )

She said that for years she secretly slept in an old bra to which she had sewn stuffed socks that nestled between her breasts, keeping them apart so vertical lines did not develop and her decolletage remained youthfully smooth.

“It started out as my secret, I didn’t want to talk about my wrinkles or the first bra I made, which was ugly,” she said. ( read nore here )

Here is more imformation about how you can get your very own wrinkle fighting bra .

Happy Birthday Charlie Chaplin 122 years old

I woke up this morning to say good morning to my twitter family .  Charlie Chaplin trending right there in front of me. If you know me offline you know that Charlie really even eclipses the guyliner contingent as far as devotion goes.

Well Charlie is the original guyliner king. How did this love affair with Charlie Chaplin begin. Like allot of things that become dear to me its by chance. I think the Celestine Prophecy falling off a friends book case on my head is the best.

I was a Junior in High School my study hall was in the library. This was in the old fashion 1990's where we didn't have cell phones. There wasn't a computer but a card catalog using the Dewey decimal system. When Id get bored with actually studying . Id roam the Library looking for books with good pictures for me to sketch . Then while I was trying to pull out a very large book about the golden age of Hollywood. There was the autobiography of Charlie Chaplin. It seemed to jump off the shelf and into my hands. I felt compelled to read it . I didn't check it out everyday during study hall Id go to the shelf and eagerly read the pages.  My friends indulged this latest fascination. Even buying me a boxed VHS set of his movies.

Back then in the 90's you had to research things . So I went to the library went to it checking out books. Reading everything I could get my hands on. Then the Chaplin movie came out around that time. My two best girlfriends went with me . I promised if they indulged the arty weird stuff I'd do normal things like go bowling. Go to dances all that jazz. I did get annoying especially if we watched a movie . If it was a United Artists Film " You know United Artists was a company started by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford , Charlie Chaplin which was the beginning of the end , of the star system in Hollywood" After time they'd have fun saying you know Tracey United Artists you get what I'm saying. The biggest moment in my Chaplin fandom .  I attended a show where a ragtime orchestra played an actual score from one of his movies while the movie played. Sadly no one wanted to go with me . Though I though there would be a collective of like minded Chaplin Geeks who would indulge me. Sadly it was a bunch of season ticket holders for the venue who had nothing better to do. They were a little snobby to be honest none of my witty banter amused them. So there I was alone in the theater in a corner geeking out by myself. Just drinking it all in then at intermission a violin player indulged me in a geek out. Yeah I always seem to gravitate to the band go figure. What captivated me about him was that he was a flawed human like all of us. He was a innovator in his craft . The messages in his film spoke to you are indeed timeless. The use of expression in silent films always just amazes me . Charlie in some way touched me in a place in my heart that he holds.( I know this is a bit gushey but allow me the liberty)  I cant tell you of one pivotal moment that did it for me . You can find the humor and beauty in his films. Most of all he makes you laugh at yourself. He knew human pain but also the element of falling down and getting back up. Sometimes in failing you suceed . I had to pay tribute to this beautiful artist who is so dear not only to me but the world . Happy Birthday Charles Spencer Chaplin xoxox

The Royal Wedding Fever

Feeling Nostalgic you can own this for 9.99 on EBAY ( I've even provided the link below)

When Prince Charles and Lady Diana got married I was 7 years old it was summer vacation. My best friend and I were playing " Princess Wedding" all week with my moms slips over our heads as veils. I remember the day remarkable as it may seem. My mom woke me up at 6:00 am , she told me when I got older if I didn't wake up she too would have went back to bed. I shot out of bed with my Holly Hobie night gown on ready to see a real princess get married. I know you may find this hard to believe but I was a very expressive and bubbly child . I must have danced around the living room all morning. Looking at her flower girls wishing it was me with a wreath of fresh cut flowers on my head . Beautiful dresses to wear the whole day through. How on earth could I even proclaim any sort of association with pop culture and not write about this . I will have to miss this next Royal wedding due to the fact I am now a grown up dragging at work for a whole day isn't really an option for me.

William &a Kate

Since there wedding hasn't happened yet . What Caught me as I was surfing the net one night . I realized that I am not the only anglophile out there. Other then an extreme devotion to a the guyliner contingent. Also a love of everything Austen. As I write this I'm thinking of many cultural and historic things that I love about England so let's not play coy. I'm a full blown anglophile cant even rationalize it . I digress , there is allot of merchandise for this wedding. I think we should take a look at this stuff. I will provide the links in the captions so you too may own such things as royal wedding condoms.

Crown Jewels Condoms Prince William Kate Royal Wedding 49.99 free shipping

So I thought I'd give you a peak at what is going in the ways of memorabilia.  We will do some more posts on the wedding what the bride wore all that jazz. So is there any sovenir your looking to purchase ? I think I'll wait till the after wedding sales. Since Princess Diana's favorite band was Duran Duran why not play a new Duran song to take us into the future.

Pop Culture : Breast Milk Producing Cows

I think PTB in some aspects has visited the Island of  Dr.Moreau . Where Zombie Ants and Botox Pups frolic in utter bliss. While Duran Duran plays The Man Who Stole the Leopard  in the back ground. Well as I was getting ready for work listening to the news. I heard about cow's producing human breast milk. I ran to the television with the tooth brush hanging out my mouth to look upon this site. Its a wonder I didn't lose my English muffins that I had for breakfast. I mean the intention is good to feed many babies. Just the whole premise of messing with nature in this way. Here is an excerpt explaining moo-re

Chinese scientists claim to have genetically modified cows to produce milk with the same nutrients in human breast milk.

Researchers reportedly used cloning technology to mix human and cow DNA to achieve the bizarre feat, London's Telegraph reported Sunday.

"Our study describes transgenic cattle whose milk offers the similar nutritional benefits as human milk," wrote Professor Li in the journal Public Library of Science One. "The modified bovine milk is a possible substitute for human milk." ( read article in full New York Daily Post )

Though I guess the animal kingdom has been nursing each others orphaned offspring since the beginning of time. There wasn't any genetic tampering. Just an animal mama not looking a species just seeing a baby in need.

So what do you think of  human breast milk producing cows ?

Here is a little Duran Duran for you.
