Saturday Sheet Masking

On Instagram you have been seeing people wearing sheet masks. This is now a two year old trend. I've been wanting to try , while in target the other night. I found a whole bunch of sheet masks . I will say that the prices vary. The mask I purchased was $1.80 USD . The weather extremely cold this evening in the northeastern United States. What a perfect night to mask.

The mask feels like the texture of a moist towelette, slight oily consistency. The smell is a robust coconut, the package says the smell of vacation I agree. 

 

 
 

I applied the mask it's was cooling and soothing on my dry combination skin. The mask did slightly feel intense when I applied it . I put on some music for ten minutes, dreaming of beachs,warmth and summer vacations. When I removed the mask my skin felt tacky that soon disappeared. My skin felt glowing and soft . I'll say I'm a fan , also eager to try more. 

Columbus Art Musem Exhibt " Spin Art " Featuring Record Album Cover Art

Columbus Art Musem is hosting an exhbit called " Spin Art " Which will run from Feburary 19, 2016 to August 21, 2016 . There will be 90 albums on display for this exhibit , aquired with the help of  local record store in Columbus Ohio called  Spoonful Records  and private collectors. 

"The exhibition showcases albums by musicians including Pink Floyd,Funkadelic, Run the Jewels, and Sonic Youth, to name just a few. And designs by Andy Warhol, Roger Dean, Winston Smith, Gerhard Richter, and many more artists." ( via Columbus Art Musem website ) 

Vinyl Records have increased in popularity over the past decade, I know my self there is nothing like cover art and liner notes that seem to complete the musical experience you go on with the artist. I've not had that connection with a jewel case. The Columbus Dispatch reported on this upcoming exibit saying 

"The upswing matches a national spike in vinyl sales: Nine million records were sold in the first half of 2015 (a full tally for the year is expected in mid-March), according to the Recording Industry Association of America. By comparison, 14 million were sold in all of 2014." ( Via the Columbus Dispatch )

Pop Culture : April Fools Urban Myth Mikey and Pop Rocks

I think growing up in the 80's was an amazing time to be a kid. We were obsessed with sea monkeys , silly putty the urban myth of pop rocks and soda in combination exploding your stomach. How Mikey from the Life cereal commercials ended up as a part of this urban legend I haven't a clue. I'll explain this for our younger readers and people who missed this on there playground. I thought that on Aprils Fools Day why not talk about an urban myth.


In the 80's Life Cereal did a commercial with a cute kid in them named Mikey.



Well back in the 80's the school yard rumor was that Mikey died from eating pop rocks also drinking soda . His stomach exploded so kids cautioned each other not to ever eat pop rocks and drink soda together for you may follow the fate of Mikey. I had a slumber party none of us would eat pop rocks and drink soda . Though we did freeze each others underwear. This myth has been debunked for Mikey actor John Gilchrist is all grown up alive and well. He even reprises his role in 1986 as Uncle Mikey.

"A few years after the commercial appeared, a false urban legend spread that the actor who had played Little Mikey had died after eating an unexpectedly lethal combination of Pop Rocks (a type of carbonated hard candy) and a carbonated soft drink, which caused his stomach to inflate with carbon dioxide. However, the legend is false, as Gilchrist lived into adulthood and Pop Rocks contain less carbon dioxide than half a can of such soft drinks."

Breakfast and Books (What we are Reading)

I love to read though I go through phases where I can't be bothered. On the other side of the coin I go on a reading binge. I decided to make this weeks rotation pop culture orientated. I will post my thoughts on these three books on Friday. There are two new books and one classic 80's staple. Pop Culture : What is Anime ?

My friends who are into Anime/Manga are devoted. Sometimes they will talk about it seems like there talking another language. Other than watching Sailor Moon. I never really got into Anime. So we are going to take a brief look Anime. For those of us who were afraid to ask our geek chic friends " What is Anime" . This post will merely scracth the surface of this fixture of pop culture.

Japanese Animation dates back to circa 1917. Over the years many forms of Japanese animation followed it wasn't until the 1960's that we started to see the Anime we know today take shape. The " God Father of Anime/Manga " Was a Japanese Cartoonist named Osamu Tezuka.



In writing this post I got a view and insight into the world of Anime. Its interesting to find out that allot of the early anime was based on Disney characters. Anime has a cult following is also a big part of Japanese pop culture. I would say America has also taken to Anime. Conventions all over the world bring fans together. What I get from doing this post in an effort to understand Anime better. There seems to be something for everyone. How you fit into Anime culture is all up to you. Do you consider Anime Art or Cartoon ?

David Bowie Retrospective NYC

David Bowie will be featured at New York City's Museum of Art and Design. This retrospective will be a collection of Bowie's music , video , image, performance art . I will be in NYC when this exhibit is open. I think any self respecting Bowie fan in the area should. This should be a feast for the eyes and creative soul. Also screenings of his movies and open forums to discuss them. Here is some more information on the retrospective.

Expanding past his notoriety as a musician, David Bowie, Artist showcases the too-often-overlooked diversity and multifaceted nature of Bowie’s total artistic output. Obsessive Facination by Tracey J Whitney 2005

   Pop Trash Beauty had a big pop art infulence. I fell in love with Andy Warhol at age 7 it was all over. Though I did go through impressionist phase. Who dosen't at one time in there life. These days I am gravitating towards grafiti art and Mexican surrealists.  I watched this video on youtube about " Introduction to Pop Art" wanted to share it with you. I think its a perfect jumping off point if your interested in the genre. Google some of the artists mentioned in the video. You may have been a fan and  not known. The collage above was made by me when I was sick in bed for a week. People kept bringing me tabloids to help pass the time. So I took the pictures and cut them up. Hand painting each with acrylic paint. My attempt at pop art . Ive also posted some of my favorite pieces with factiods. We have younger readers who werent exactly born during the big pop art movement. So if you feel some of this is a tad basic. Well your right it is a taster to get them hooked. Just call me your friendly neighborhood pop art pusher. In the hopes the younger generation will carry the love on. Who is your favorite pop artist ?

Andy Warhol's Turtleneck For Sale

Once again Coco Perez has inspired a blog post. Andy Warhols turtleneck. The Halston Casmere turtleneck has a price tag close to the 15,000 dollar range.( of course its Halston )  Seems to raise the question where would one wear Andy Warhols turtleneck ?  I know it wont be worn just being funny. At a vintage store a black cashmere Halston turtleneck not worn by an art icon would go for 50.00-200.00 depending on condition. My friend who is a collector of oodles of vintage did a guesstimating for me.

This whole post got me thinking. We have a culture of  restaurant chains and some museum's are built on celebrity artifacts. If they show it we will come. Every time a person of note posts a twit pic. Seriously who hasn't hastily clicked on a twit pic of some celeb's half eaten food. *raises hand* love to say. I'm above it but not so lucky. I clicked on a Picture of Donnie Wahlberg pumping gas the other day.Just to kinda hit home the fact we love pop culture. Our fascination with the artists who generate it . Is something that has been around forever. With tech being fused into our lives it only intensifies this fascination. So will Andy Warhols turtleneck sell?Absolutely it will and quickly. I would love to see Warhols turtleneck make one last red carpet appearance. On a person who is vibrant and full of life. Someone Andy would have entertianed at the factory. Then it can be put in acid free paper or perhaps on exhibit at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg. So I leave you with a kind of funny comparison. 1980s Saturday Morning Cartoons

Growing up in the 80's Saturday morning cartoons were an event. I'd wake up about 7am rock out a bowl of frosted flakes. Saturday was " sugar cereal " day. Never allowed to have it during the week. Then a bunch of kids would go outside play reenacting the cartoons. I can't tell you how many times my mom called me in from the Hall of Justice for Lunch. Many people in this generation will say it was the best era of Saturdays morning cartoons. Here are my top 5 pics for retro cartoons with a bonus #6 . So what was your favorite ? Record Store Day (That's Entertianment , Worcester MA )

It was a glooming day today, cold  an rainy. Couldn't dampen the spirits of the many music fans that came out today. Record Store Day is actually international in scope, following there twitter site. Updates from all over the world poured as diehard vinyl record fans , music makers , curiosity seekers made the pilgrimage to there local mom and pop record shops. To some people it was a chance to take a peek into those loudly painted shops, with the too cool for school clerks. To see what actually goes on in these places. I decided to take my 68 year old mother with me to see what she thought. I told her she was helping me with my twitter updates. As we walked up to that’s Entertainment in Worcester Massachusetts. You could hear the Local Band "LUNCH" singing about Zombies. My mom's face pursed with that look many mothers get, when they are about to be intertwined with the culture of there children. Her eyes scanning the outside windows that had large comic book character posters hanging. As we opened the door the music got louder.

"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April." As we pass the Red Room where the band was playing. My moms eyes got wide this place is cool she said. Then I lost my golden girl in a crowd of many. A record shop is a feast for the lover of pop culture .The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. I asked them if I could take pictures for my blog and they were very accommodating. It was just so much fun. People were at every turn talking about genres and sub genres. Some guy was talking openly and freely about Kraftwerk punk. This blipped off my music geek radar like a torpedo. I went through the bins of vinyl’s that were just being released for Record Shop Day. I scored a very cool Elvis Costello. As I was going through the Duran Duran section. I saw my mother motion over to me all excited.






Waving her arms around I finally came over. That lady over there is Robin Lane. You should put her on your blog.  She was sharing love with her fans. They had vinyl record and CD cases for her to sign. Telling her there memories of her.Robin Lane and The Chartbusters "Robin" (Neal Young ) Then I did geek out just a little when it all sunk in .She sang a couple of songs . Her voice was smooth as ever . Lyrics that cut to your core . It was interesting to find out , she does so many good works. Through her non profit organization (When A Song Bird Sings ). Helping survivors of trauma. My Record Store Day was absolutely top notch. My mom was a fantastic assistant. I even bought her a Bon Jovi poster (Don’t ask she is the biggest Bon Jovi fan). Counting the days till I can flip it on the B-side in record utopia. Id like to give special thanks to That’s Entertainment, Robin Lane, LUNCH, vinyl records fans across the globe.
