Celluloid Dreams in the Duranaverse

Nick Rhodes

Duran Duran is at the Cannes Film Festival this week. They are performing there to an eager crowd of the glamoratti When I asked Twitter what should I blog about. My twitter friend who writes the blog  Strange Horizons  . Suggested a Duran in the movies type post. I thought it was fitting with the wild boys taking over Cannes. The performed at the VIP in an event to benefit HIV AIDS. The event was put on by Belevedere vodka and ( RED ). So in celebration of our boys visit in Cannes. We will take a look at some of there cinematic affiliations.  There very name Duran Duran comes from a character in the 1968 Science Fiction Film Barbarella staring Jane Fonda. Dr Duran Durand is a mad scientist who is the creator of the Positronic Ray which Babarella will have to save earth. This movie is a must watch. Especially for our younger readers.

Movie Sound Tracks
I would say the one that comes to mind is View to a Kill from the 1985 James Bond Film View to a Kill. This year was a sad one with the loss of Ian Flemming James Bond creator. The band paid tribute to Flemming during there recent mini tour. View to a Kill was revamped with a soulful string intro that left audiences breathless as front man Bon Simnon Lebon . Sang the tune wearing a white tuxedo jacket. This is indeed a iconic flim and music pairing. Is the most memorible to most fans.

VIEW TO A KILL!!!

There most recent pairing was for the American Express David Lynch Unstaged Event which took place in march. They partner with Lynch for a web cast where he'd use his cinematic genius incorporated with the music of Duran Duran for a Live Event where he would lace in images during the performance. The most thrilling aspect was that it was live. Even though state of the art technolodgy brought us this show. It made me think of the live radio shows of the past. He is slated also to direct the bands next video this spring.

Sing Blue Silver
Sing blue silver

Sing Blue Silver is a documentary about Duran Duran's 1983-1984 World Tour directed by Michael Collins. A sixty-minute edited version of the documentary was aired on MTV (and later other music channels) under the title Blue Silver.

Sing Blue Silver was originally released on videotape (in VHS and Betamax formats) and on laserdisc, near the end of 1984. It was re-issued on DVD in April 2004. A 1984 book of the same name featured still photography by official tour photographer Denis O'Regan.

This movie has beacome to Duran Duran fans a Rocky Horror picture show. In the past there have been fan organized screenings in different cities. I've never been from what I hear it gets pretty interactive. Couldnt do a post without mentioning it of course.

We merely scracthed the surface in this blog post. I hope you enjoyed your look at Duran Duran in the Movies.

  2. Great post! And thanks for the mention!
Yeah, I would agree with you on the iconic pairing for "View to a Kill." Duran always seemed to be living the James Bond lifestyle. Always in stylish suits, in exotic locales, driving sleek cars, and oodles of beautiful girls around. Add a maniacal, flamboyant villain and you've got a story. I suppose Boy George might've fit the bill at the time. ;)
There's more than a dash of Indiana Jones in there for fun as well. In fact, it was the Duran videos that inspired Speilberg to film "Temple of Doom" in Sri Lanka. Wow, the boys could be action heroes. Say, that gives me an idea... :)
