#7 DuranDuran Inspired Look Sing Blue Silver

Duran Duran's second studio album RIO has a track called the Chauffeur. The song the Chauffeur is one of my favorites the music video is shot in black & white.Almost as if Duran Duran breathed life into a Patrick Nagel painting. The interesting tidbit about it is Duran Duran never appeared in the video. So my inspiration comes from the video vixens there are two main women who are I guess telepathically conected by a broken mirror chard that tells them to meet in lingere an dance in a parking garage. There hair is slicked back an there make up is a heavy liquid eyelined eye. The refrain of the song is " Sing Blue Silver" I thought the eye should reflect it .

Now that you have watched the video listened to the song. This is what I came up with .I also wanted to do a modern take on the makeup look. Very bold Nagel like eye was really came to mind.

I uses a 3 color cream shadow pallet .
Maybeline Eye Studio #10 Blue Freeze
the only additional shadow was a black matte for the creases.

This is the same palette we used for guyliner 101
You can go under the black areas with silver glitter if you want a jazzy effect.
The telepathic mirror chard is telling me to go
to the parking garage

So there you have it the Sing Blue Silver inspired eye. I hope you enjoy it ! Next post will be about an art exhibit touring the country. Its a photo essay on eating disorders. Look forward to sharing that with you.

Guyliner 101 : Guy + Eyeliner = Guyliner

So this post is for the men folk who read pop trash beauty. You'd be surprised how many men do indeed read PTB . We have received confidential emails asking for this blog post . Allot of concerns are with the eyeliner bleeding. We have seen this happen to guyliner pro's. They start off with a thin line as the night progressing they have a smokey eye. So I'll help you out with a few tips the ladies have been using for ages.

Guyliner Tools
I would stick with the wet n wild line. Its cheap carried in most drug stores. As you get more comfortable you'll want to branch out.

Wet n Wild - Black Kohl Eyeliner Pencil
Cream Concealer - You want to get as close to your natural skin tone.
Wet n Wild - Eye Shadow Single - Blue , Purple , Brown (pick the color you like)
Cotton Swabs
Eye Makeup Remover

Tip : Remember during application that the skin under the eye is like tissue paper. The skin on your face is a soft Kleenex . Be gentle under your eye .

Take your eyeshadow primer / concealer an apply it to lower lashline.
This is a base that will help the eyeliner stay put longer .

Take your eyeliner an warm it up on your arm or back side of your hand. Draw lines back an fourth till the point of the pencil isn't has harsh. Fresh eyeliners out of the pack are very sharp. I don't want you to poke your eye
If you have access to a makeup mirror get it positioned to eye level .. Especially if your new to this its a foreign concept eyes rebel.  Place your elbow of your writing hand on the sturdy surface.

Gentally pull the under eye area taut .

with your dominate hand apply eyeliner to your water line blending with the lashline.
Using gentle back an fourth Stokes

Blend the eyeliner so you have one straight line
take a little eye shadow on a q-tip blend it into your
eyeliner this is additional insurance your eyeliner wont bleed.
Guy +Eyeliner = Guyliner

Famous Lovers of Guyliner
Charlie Chaplin, Johnny Depp, David Bowie, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger,Steven Tyler, Marilyn Manson,Rudolph Valentino, Adam "Glambert" Lambert, Brian Ferry,Robert Smith

Hope you enjoyed guyliner 101 please email me with questions . So ladies do you love a man with guyline ?

Random Life Post : My Inspired Makeup Looks .

First off Guy liner is taking a bit longer then anticipated. I have been asked by our male readers to do this. Yes we do have some. I want it to be excellent . I think the tricks an tips I have for you will really give you the impact guy liner should. So you want to know what goes into a Duran Duran Inspired look. Most of all Why I do them. Why I don't use models even. If I think I'm a model ?!?! *shakes head*  . Um rest assured that I don't think that . I kinda stand on the principle if a regular looking women like me can do this, so can you. This post is a culmination of your questions about the looks.

RIO Inspired look. I am doing this look over . I was to be honest scared. Can you see the fear ?

Q: How do you come up with the looks?
A: Honestly I get an idea an work from there . I do sketch them out on a face chart but none really come out like I imagined in the case of Blame The Machines it came out better. Though we did have a 1st draft

First Draft
Q: Why are the looks always about Duran Duran ?
A: I adore them like allot of you do. So with there new album dropping it kinda felt like the right time. I had neglected my makeup skills . It just felt right an they inspire me creatively. It wont always be about them. We have a Zoolander requested look coming. Ive been playing with a look based on the French impressionist era impaticular Seurat's Pointillism.  I think you'll like the art inspired looks allot.

The concept of pointillism is to create solid space of color by using dots of two or more colors in an area. French artist Georges-Pierre Seurat made this technique famous. His painting, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1888) via http://www.incredibleart.org/

New Moon On Monday Inspired Look
There was something missing from this look . So I didn't post it.
I wanted the eyes to be Tiger inspired . If you want it I'll post .

Q:Did you get injured doing one of these looks ?
A: YES, I had an allergic reaction to the makeup remover . I should know better its my fault for not patch testing first.

Q: Does the band know ? If so which one do they like?
A: I haven't a clue if they know or like?

Q: Will you do the Leopard with sharper pictures? I love this look wish I could see it clearer.
A: I agree when I change out the pics . I will repost the blog entry with a ( REPOST ) in the title.

Q: When is the youtube channel coming ?
A: Soon !  I got a refresher course on Hue an Saturation that is saving the videos. What happened to hold it up. I looked as yellow as Lisa Simpson an talked too much.

I had allot of fun doing these looks . I think the best blog post will be the one with pictures of all of you an your takes on them. The last two in the Duran Series will be Red Carpet Massacre , Sing Blue Silver. I will always do anything you request. I love how these posts have inspired so many of you . That's what it is all about we have many things to explore an makeup to play with. So keep reading !

My Favorite Golden Globe Starlet Marilyn Monroe

Photo via Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/39766756@N07/

I will do a post on my favorite Golden Globe starlet of 2011. For now Id like to look back on a Golden Globe starlet who set the tone for what we call now "Old Hollywood Glamour" . One image that comes to mind is Marilyn Monroe 1962 Golden Globes in her emerald green sequined Norman Norell gown. She wore green emerald earrings given to her by Frank Sinatra. She looked like a movie star in the truest form. There was no Red carpet apologies going on for her size 12 curves. There was no snarky commentators talking about her curves. Just Marilyn showing up to accept her award for World Film Favorite: Female . With her beautiful smile an sparkle in her eyes. Sadly this would be her last Golden Globe Awards show.

"Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul".

-Marilyn Monroe -

What we could learn from that in 2011. When starlets are apologizing for size 8. When in the up coming days will hear about armpit cleavage. Some stylists will become stars themselves. While others who got it wrong will be licking there wounds. As an abundance of photos will flood the internet reminding them. To them I send love an admiration for taking a risk.  So as I sit here in my pink leopard print pajamas with my cat on my lap. The Patriots game on the television the golden globes streaming on my computer. I feel like maybe I should go apply some red lipstick an wing tipped eyeliner while writing about this. Have some Frank Sinatra playing while sipping a martini . I posted below a picture of the actual dress that sold at Christies in 1999 for 96,000 dollars. Isn't beautiful lets all take a moment to appreciate it . All the sequins were hand sewn . Rumor has it that the dress had to be altered the night before due to Marilyn having a big weight loss in the breast area.

Lot 53 - A SEQUINED EVENING DRESS

The backless, full-length dress of emerald green jersey, heavily embroidered with matching sequins, decorated with inset waistband. Unlabeled, by Norman Norell, worn by Marilyn Monroe at the Golden Globe Award Ceremonies in Hollywood on March 5, 1962, when accepting her award as 1961's "World's Favorite Film Star."
Estimate: $30,000-$50,000
Selling Price: $96,000

So there you have it my little tribute to my favorite Golden Globes Starlett . Who is yours ?

This is inspired by Duran Duran's song Union of The Snake I call it " Lizard Queen. I wanted her to have a hint of lizard . To keep in mind you can go as crazy as you want with this. Doing little tiny accents near your outer v . I find making the lizard skin is addictive so you may want to walk away an take a break. Ive also done this look in sliver an blue. Yet the green works best . We will have a youtube tutorial for all the looks. So glad everyone is loving this. Please give it a try an send pics.

Using Gel eyeliner an lace I make my lizard Skin

When Was Fashion Born ? Lice DNA Holds The Clue.

If your a regular reader to PTB you know that posts like this aren't unusual. I too write this post with squirmy feeling to say the least. Going to a public school just outside of Boston, I was made aware of Lice the usual way. The school nurse comming to your classroom with a box of combs and Tongue depressers. Some poor kid going home with a note pinned to there jacket. While everyone stayed a distance away to avoid catching cooties as children called them. I have never had them or a tick even . Misqutoes don't discriminate they are all about me in the summer. Funny thing body chemistry men , paracites seemed to be repelled by mine. ( I am joking of course)

So on too the topic at hand this little parasitic freeloader have given insight into the age old question. When did we start wearing clothes? After reading the many articles out there about this today. I was fascinated too learn that we ran around for the most part for an estimated 100,000 years in our birthday suites. Anthropologists estimate  we have only been fashionistas for just 180,000 years . So were to the Lice factor into all of this . I've provided an excerpt from the article

The key to the study by David Reed and colleagues, which appears in Molecular Biology And Evolution, is that there are two kinds of lice that hang around humans: the head lice that live on our scalp, and the body lice that live in our clothes. At one point in the past these two shared a common ancestor, Reed reasoned, and the body lice would have split off and become a separate group once they had human clothing in which to live.

The genomes of the two kinds of lice split somewhere between 83,000 and 170,000 years ago, which means that humans ran naked for hundreds of thousands of years without body hair or clothing. Clothing probably arose during an Ice Age, and eventually enabled humans to leave Africa to explore colder parts of the world. Link

Sorry the video was campy an fun. Wonder what Ice Age fashion looked like ?  Were there trends to follow ?  Your frock is so last Ice Age darlink . So there you have it how the dreaded little paracite of school children everywhere. Gave us an idea of when we all started getting into this crazy little thing called fashion.

Stylish Ladies In My Life

I was thrilled to be nominated by  In New York Paris Tommorow  for a stylish blogger award. I've totally been geeking out over it . I  am going to nominate my 7choices for Stylish Blogger Award . Ive noticed that Jewles From The Roving Stove  an In New York Paris Tommorow    both did some fabulous lists on "Things You Didnt Know About Me "  So I thought Id follow suite.

My first art Exhibit with my orchestra geek jacket around my waist .
1. ) I played the violin for many years an when I was 13 got to study at Tangle wood for a couple of weeks with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Violin got put away after my hormones an teenage social life picked up . My mom is still upset over that one.

2.) I was a guest on a Talk Show called Tempest. It was in the 1990's when I was in college. The show was shortly cancelled after that . I wonder if it was something I said .

3) I love Olivia Newton John if I were ever to have a girl crush . From age 4 to age 8 I'd make my family sit through living room performances of her songs. I didn't get he words right but I belted them out with confidence. so I don't think they noticed?

4. ) Have you ever heard of Colony Collapse. Well I am obsessed with it to the point Ive rescued honey bees from the city bus, puddles , or any forms of peril that I see.

5. Everclear an Donuts .. Only in my random life do the two actually go together. One night after a music festival in Tennessee my best friend Jessie were partaking in the Chattanooga night life. This guy in a pink boa an a cowboy hat waved to us to come sit with them. It was Everclear who headlined the festival.Well make a long story short Art an I got into a debate over Dunkin Donuts on the East Coast / Crispy Cream on the west coast. So he sent a guy to get us donuts. The rest of the night I ate donuts drank beer with a group of very cool dudes from the pacific northwest. I can tell I'm getting old beacause the thought of beer an donuts together bleck !

6.) I have a weakness for Baristas. I don't know what it is about them. Maybe its just the pure an simple fact that at times a man is making me coffee. I like to call these micro crushes, beacause in that short exchange. I'm anamoured. Then once I leave its over. Though there was a Barista a couple of years ago. That I would make sure I  had makeup on for even on the weekends.

7) My Saturday Night Dates with Kevyn Aucoin : I would take one of his books put on some funky music. Pick one of his looks an go to town creating it . It never turned out like his.
